Design Word Definitions

Here we have provided a few terms used in the graphic design and web development industries. To familiarize yourself with these terms, click on the icons below to view an explanation of each term.

Responsive Web design

This approach suggests that design and development should respond to the user's behavior and environment based on screen size, platform and orientation. The practice consists of a mix of flexible grids and layouts, images and an intelligent use of CSS media queries.

Process Color

The CMYK color model (process color, four color) is a subtractive color model, used in color printing, and is also used to describe the printing process itself. CMYK refers to the four inks used in Process Color printing: cyan, magenta, yellow and key (black).

Screen Resolution

Refers to the number of horizontal and vertical pixels (individual points of color) on a display screen. At higher resolutions, such as 1600 x 1200, items appear sharper. Image files viewed on a website usually do not have enough resolution to be used in print.

Typeface and Font

A font is a set of printable or displayable text characters in a specific style and size. The type design for a set of fonts is the typeface and variations of this design form the typeface family . Thus, Helvetica is a typeface family, Helvetica italic is a typeface, and Helvetica italic 10-point is a font.

Static versus Dynamic

A static website contains information that does not change. It remains the same, or static, for every viewer of the site. A dynamic website contains information that changes on the website depending on a variety of factors that can be programmed in to the website.
